NASHIA is a national nonprofit organization that assists state governments and their partners in developing policies, programs, and systems that improve outcomes for people with brain injury and their families. NASHIA has a particular focus on the criminal justice system because approximately 60% of incarcerated individuals have experienced a brain injury, far higher than estimates for the general population. Given this prevalence, officers are likely to interact regularly with people who have experienced brain injury, often without knowing it. Training can help officers recognize possible signs of brain injury, adjust their communication, use effective de-escalation strategies, and connect individuals with appropriate support while promoting safety for everyone involved.
