The ILEETA Legal Update is a continuing program that explores current case law, constitutional issues, and emerging legal challenges affecting policing.
This series is designed as an instructor development resource. The goal is not to hand trainers pre-packaged material, but to help ILEETA members deepen their legal understanding, strengthen confidence in the classroom, and model lawful, professional policing practices.
To support ILEETA’s mission to inspire excellence in law enforcement training by helping trainers better understand the legal principles that shape policing.
Each episode helps trainers sharpen their own understanding of the law so they can teach, lead, and guide officers more effectively.
The Legal Update builds a library of content covering use of force, search and seizure, detention, constitutional policing, landmark cases, and emerging issues.
Law enforcement trainers are responsible for helping officers understand not only what the law says, but how legal principles apply during complex, fast-moving encounters.
The ILEETA Legal Update focuses on overarching U.S. constitutional principles while also creating space to compare legal standards, rule of law, and use of force considerations internationally.
These conversations are relevant to trainers, supervisors, agency leaders, legal instructors, academy staff, field training officers, and anyone responsible for preparing officers to make lawful, professional decisions.
